1/Could you introduce yourself?
はじめに自己紹介をして頂けないでしょうか。

Hello, my name is NIKY ROEHREKE.
At the moment I am creating illustration, graphic design and animation in London.

こんにちは、ローレケ　ニキです。
現在ロンドンでイラスト、グラフイックやアニメーションを作っています。

2/Now, can you tell us the reason why you have started?
それでは、次にきっかけを教えてくれませんか？

As a child I loved to draw and dance.
I went to a ballet school in the UK to become a professional dancer, but due to a back injury I had to give up that dream.
Around that time I got acquainted with art, which was the key to my very own way of expressing myself in a way which ballet did not offer.

踊る事と絵を描くのが大好きな子供でした。
イギリスのバレエ学校に行ってプロを目指していたのですが、腰を痛めてしまって、諦めました。
その時アートに出会い、踊りでは満たされなかった自分だけの表現方法をみつけました。

3/Is there an artist who you have been influenced by?
影響を受けているアーティストはいますか?

If I absolutely had to choose an artist, it would be YAYOI KUSAMA, NOBUYOSHI ARAKI and TARO OKAMOTO.
They express something significant with their individual styles, which communicates with my heart.
But the biggest influence is myself.
The happenings of every single day, the people I meet, the things I observe, the places I go and what I feel and think towards all those things, create the basis for my work.

アーティストでしたら草間彌生、荒木経惟と岡本太郎ですね。
彼らはすごく大事なことをindividualなスタイルで表現していて、
私の心にコミュニケートくれます。
でも一番の影響は自分自信です。
私の毎日の出来事、出会う人、見る物、行く場所、そしてそれに対して感じたり、
考えたりする事が私の作品のベースとなります。

4/Could you tell us the deepest memory of works?
今までの作品の中で一番思い出深い作品を教えて頂けないでしょうか？

Unforgettable works are always the ones concerning my Asian and European cultural background.
Because it always seems to go wrong!
It is a theme that always confuses me, because I never seem to find a clear answer to it.
Nevertheless, I would like to continue the search for answers to what it means to come from a mixed background in this mixed up modern world and hope to never stop moving in my quest.

思い出深いのは、アジアとヨーロッパの二つの文化を持っている自分がテーマとなった作品ですね。
いままではどうしてもうまくいかないから!
いつも悩ませられるテーマで、考えても答えがでない。
文化がどんどんミックスしてきているこのモダンな世界で、
その意味を追求し続けていきたいです。

 

5/What kind of work would you like to create in the future?
これからは、どんな作品を手掛けて行きたいですか？

In the beginning, I enjoyed expressing those things inside myself that words cannot describe through abstract painting.
It was purely FINE ART.
While studying the Graphic Design course at Central Saint Martins, I wasn’t satisfied with the fact that a painting ends simply as a painting. Now I am rather interested in how much I can use my painting skills in order to design books, poster and moving images.

アートを始めた頃は、自分の心の中にある言葉では説明できないものを
アブストラクトなペインティングにする事が好きでした。
ファインアートでしたね。
ロンドンでCentral Saint Martins大学のグラフィックデザインコースに行ってからは、
ペインティングをペインティングとして終わらせるのはなんかものたりなくて、
ペインティングのスキルを使ったデザインや映像に興味があります。

6/What music do you like?
好きな音楽は何ですか？

At the moment I listen to Alva Noto, Four Tet, and World 's End Girlfriend.
This is music from which I draw inspiration from.
I listen to the particular sounds, rather than the melody.
When I create the actual work, I often listen to classical music.
Most of the time I listen to Mozart and Chopin, especially Mozart; he is a genius. Sometimes images pop up only by listening to his music.
But every now and then when I’m stuck with work it is a necessity to go out and dance until the morning hours.

最近では、alva noto, four tet, world’s end girlfriendが好きですね。
インスピレーションになる音楽です。
メロデイーというよりも色んな音がどんどん聞こえてくる。
そして、作品を作るときには、クラシックを聴きます。
モーツアルトとショパンをよく聴くのですが、特にモーツアルトは天才的ですね。
聴いているだけで、イメージが膨らんで行くのです。
で、行き詰まったらやっぱりクラブで朝まで踊るのは必要ですね。

7/What kind of direction do you think the ‘digital’ is going to go?
これからのデジタルの流れについてどうなっていくと思いますか？

Originally, the human race worked hard in order to make life more convenient, but I have the feeling that the current digital age has gone too far.
I think balance is important. The current digital age is evolving too fast; it is quite scary.
I think that in this present world, the existence of imperfect, human and handmade things are important. We also have to treasure true communication, meaning communication where you can look straight into each others eyes.

元々人間は生活を楽に、便利にするために、がんばってきたのだけれど、
最近のデジタルの流れは、行き過ぎている感じがしますね。
なにもかもバランスが大事だと思います。
流れが早すぎて、怖いですね。
「どんどんデジタルが進んでいる世界で人間らしい完璧でないもの」
「だれかが手で作った」って感じられるものが存在する事が大切だと思います。
そして、コミュニケーションでも、向かい合って話すようなコミュニケーションを
大切にして行かなければいけないと思います。
